Last night my son (8th grade) had a football game that resulted in a massacre. His team lost BIG time. Houston was upset, like any player would be, but he was really down on himself because he made a very crucial mistake during the first play of the game. His coaches talked to him extensively and so did Jerry and I.
Jer and I were both competitive athletes, we can empathize with what Houston is feeling. As much as it hurts to lose (in sports or any other aspect of life) that loss can be used as motivation to be stronger and better.
Houston said (after he was done wallowing in his loss) that the mistake he made will never happen again. If he had never made that mistake, he would not have had that opportunity to grow as a player and become stronger because of it.

Now that the "parenting" portion of this post is over, I give you my personalized mom jersey. BAMMMMM! Every mother should have one. (Houston's is on the right.)
